  • Bump map issues | VRay 4.20.01

    hi guys,

I'm experiencing a wierd issue in this new version Vray next 2 (I was using Vray next 1).

Seems like darker tones on my bump image aren't considered as bump ... First time I face that issue. It was working correclty before..

Any of you are experiencing the same issue ?

    regards,
    -CC

    Hello gouisedeau

Is it alright for you to share your project file with us, so I can test it and come back to you with more information. If this is alright, you can export it by going to V-Ray > Pack Project, and send it as an attachment or upload it to a file-sharing service of your choice to our support email - support@chaosgroup.com
Please include a link to this forum topic in you message for reference.

      Hello Mr Ivanov,

      Thanks for answering.

I checked again in a new file this material and it appears that it works correctly.... I don't know what the bug was... seems like starting a new file resolve the problem

      regards,

        Update 2

It seems like I'm running again into others issue.... Appears that at the end my problem isn't really fixed OR I don't know how to properly make this work.

My goal is to make my wood material properly work with its : texture map, glossiness map, bumpmap AND at the same time apply a soft edge material.

For now, What I was doing was : putting a mix operator in the bump map slot. This mix operator containt my wood bump map AND the soft edge material.

image 1 : my main wood material

image 2 : render of my main wood material as created (you see that the edge isn't soften)

image 3: I changed the bump map mode from bumpmap (default) --> to bump texture channel . Now the softedge work but the bumpmap texture isn't correctly applied... only work as a texture, not a bumpmap...

** Note that in this file, I'm working in millimiters. And when I'm working exctly the same in a centimiters rhino file, I'm obtaining different results....looks likes it behaves differently .... I'm confuse

For instance, when I'm working in a Rhino centimeters canvas, with my main wood material and bumpmap mode set to bumpmap (default) it gaves me the same result as the image 3 (which is in a rhino millimeters canvas, and the bumpmap mode set to bump texture map channel

Image 4: render of my main wood material as created (in a rhino centimeters canvas) .. gave me same results as image 3...

here is the rhino scene, in millimteres and in centimeters : https://we.tl/t-7qaW9CYEJ5

              Hello gouisedeau

Please let me know if the solution below is what you were looking for and if it works for you:

              1. First, take your main wood material and right-click on the Reflection Glossiness' texture slot to copy it, then disable the Reflection parameter. Right under the material preview area, you have two small icons with the plus sign on them. The right one is called Add Layer. Click on it and add a Reflective coat, then paste the map, which you have copied in the texture slot of the Reflection Glossiness.
              2. Create a Generic material and enable the Bump parameter. Add the Edges texture to the texture slot, adjust it to your liking then go back to the Generic material properties. Switch the Bump > Mode/Map to Bump Texture Channel.
              3. Finally, create a Blend material and paste your main material in the Base slot, then use the Add Coat button and slot the Generic material into the newly created layer.

Apply the Blend material on your object and render to see if the result matches what you expect as a result. The screenshot here is my result - is this what you aimed to achieve?

                hi Zahari.Ivanov,

First, thank you for answering. As I can see in the image you provide, it's exactly what i'm looking for. The image 4 in my previous post is mostlikely similar as what you obtain and it's not what I'm after.

The image 2 of my previous post is the kind of finish result i'm looking for BUT with soft edges...

As you can see, when we apply a mix operator (combining a bump map and a softedge material) IN the bumpmap slot, we obtain wierd results...(see image below) it looks like the bumpmap isn't working... the black and with map appear as a color onto then material and not a geometry displacement...

And still, there is something inconsistance from a rhino file to another. I have to restart a Rhino file from scratch each time I get this wierd issu, otherwise it keeps appling my bumpmap (even a simple bump map in the bumpmap slot) of a wierd manner.... see the image below

Can you link me a file or a document on how to correctly apply a soft edge material ? thank you verymuch ! If you found something else let me know !

                regards,

                  Hello gouisedeau

Please see the following page from our official documentation: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/...#Bump-Overview
In the "Overview" section, there is a workflow description regarding the use of rounded edges. Please let me know if the information there resolved your question and helped you to achieve your goal.
